Common acne (acne vulgaris) is a disorder caused by hormones that trigger overactive sebaceous glands, leading to plugged pores and lesions. This allows the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) to grow in the follicles and produce chemicals and enzymes that end up in swelling and redness. The follicles then clog and eventually lead to the lesions we call pimples or zits.
There are actually over 50 types of acne and, in general, the incidences of acne outbreaks can be blamed on: bacteria, genetics and hormones. Over 17 million people, both men and women, in the United States have acne, but it is especially common during adolescence when it affects the face, shoulders and back. Yet while adolescence is the most common time for acne occurrences, it is possible to have unaffected skin as a teenager and then develop acne later in life.
In most cases, with proper care, the lesions will disappear, but if they are neglected, they can cause papules, postules, nodules and cysts – the pits and scars that can last throughout life. These are the physiological manifestations of acne. The demoralizing psychological ones are often more significant.
Pharmaskincare acne products attack acne on many levels. The primary concern is to treat those blemishes that have appeared on the skin. Then, it is equally important to prevent the recurrence of acne. Each of the products has been formulated to open clogged pores, destroy acne causing bacteria and relieve inflammation. The end result will be skin that is dramatically clearer and -- with proper follow through -- less prone to future attacks.
